SUMMARY:ARTUBA - Music to Make the Heart Sing
DESCRIPTION:As part of our Black History Month celebrations\, we are thrilled to be welcoming ARTUBA to Front Room. \nARTUBA’S musical influences are drawn from a wide range of styles such as Calypso\, Reggae\, Blues\, Caribbean folk songs\, Ska and Balkan melodies. Long Time Gal is a heartwarming odyssey from the Caribbean to Britain\, including original and much loved traditional songs from ARTUBA with storytelling from Doctah Burton. \nExpect to smile\, dance  and  even laugh at a mix of sumptuous original songs\, alongside unique interpretations of some much loved covers. \nARTUBA  are a highly experienced pair of musicians who formed a duo in 2021. Since that time they have played in and around the South West of England including numerous gigs in the Bristol area. Notable highlights include playing on the Bristol Ferry and Strange Brew as part of the Diaspora Festival\, performing at the Bristol Beacon at the Celebrating Age Festival. They recently performed Caribbean folk songs at Trinity Centre Bristol as part of their Windrush Celebration Day and also played at Circomedia as part of St Paul’s 2025\, carnival celebration ‘Back a Yard’. \nARTUBA developed much of their music in the Caribbean and make regular trips to Grenada as well as to St Vincent and the Grenadines\, to write and perform their tunes. They are active members of the Bristol based Diverse Artists Network and were recently featured on a BBC Bristol radio program which was broadcast across the region. In 2025 they released their debut album\, Inspiration Carriacou. \nDr Edson Burton is a writer\, storyteller and historian. Edson began his writing career in 2005 having completed his PhD thesis since then he\nhas become a prolific writer of audio\, live drama and poetry. Edson won the 2025 Tinniswood Prize for Man Friday an adaption of Daniel Defoe’s\nRobinson Crusoe. His previous audio dramas include the acclaimed R4 series Deacon starring Don Warrington. Recent live work includes the listening journey Duppy Hunter produced by Tamasha Theatre\, Coney and the Trinity Centre Bristol and the theatrical promenade Destination\nOld Market. He is the author of the poetry collection\, Seasoned. Edson is a board member of Bristol leading poetry festival Lyra festival.\nHe is currently working on a new audio drama\, a libretto\, and various screen writing projects. \nAccessibility Information: \n\nThe Front Room has step-free access.\nOn-street Blue Badge parking is available\, and there is some parking outside the venue and on the road to its right.

Gain insight\, release patterns & support your body to integrate. \n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFamily Constellations & Sound Healing — with Katie Despres & Guest Practitioner Melissa (Driftway Wellness) \nJoin a full-day workshop combining Family Constellations with sound healing integration. A chance to explore how family patterns live in the body and nervous system\, and how sound and systemic practice together can support release\, regulation\, and fresh perspective. \nWhat is Family Constellations?\nFamily or Systemic Constellations is a therapeutic approach developed by Bert Hellinger. It works on the principle that unresolved experiences in our family history don’t disappear — they can be carried forward into future generations as unconscious loyalties\, symptoms\, or repeating patterns. \nAs Dr Bruce Hoffman writes\, “The body is the final resting place of all your experiences. But not just your own. The body also carries the untold stories of those who came before.” This is at the heart of constellation work: to uncover what belongs to us\, and gently release what does not. \nA constellation creates a living map of these hidden dynamics\, using group members as representatives. Through this embodied process\, what is usually unseen becomes visible and felt. \nFamily Constellations can support you to: \n\nUnravel family and relationship challenges\nIdentify repetitive patterns in work or creativity\nManage stress\, anxiety\, and health concerns\nAddress financial limitations or blocks\nGain clarity on life direction and purpose\nRelease inherited emotional burdens\n\nWays to Take Part\nThere are different ways to participate in a constellation: \n\nIssue Holder – bring a personal or professional issue to explore. The group will support you in mapping your system.\nRepresentative – step into roles within other people’s constellations. This isn’t roleplay\, but a somatic process: many people experience powerful shifts and insights while representing.\nWitness – hold presence in the circle. Even from this position\, you may find parallels and resonance with your own life.\n\nNot every participant is guaranteed to have their own constellation. Typically we are able to explore four issues in a full-day workshop. At the start of the day\, we will explain how issue holders will be selected. What’s important to know is that every role is valuable\, and many people describe their most moving experiences happening while representing. \nWhy Sound Healing?\nWe will be joined by Melissa from Driftway Wellness\, who will guide a sound healing session in the afternoon. Sound healing uses vibration and resonance to work directly with the body and nervous system — helping to settle\, release\, and integrate. Just as constellation work reveals what is carried in our family system and embodied in our lives\, sound offers a complementary way to ground those shifts. \nThe tones and frequencies can soothe the stress response\, support emotional regulation\, and allow the constellation process to land more deeply. This combination of constellations and sound creates space for insight to move from awareness into the body\, so that integration is not just mental\, but felt. \nOutline of the Day (approximate\, timings flexible)\n\n10:00 – 13:00: Arrival\, introductions\, settling\, 2 constellations\n13:00 – 14:00: Lunch (bring your own or explore nearby)\n14:00 – 16:00: 2 constellations\nAround 16:00: Sound bath with Melissa\nClosing circle: Around 17:00- 17.30\n\n(We’ll remain flexible with timing to allow the process to breathe; this will be explained in the opening circle.) \nTickets\nFor this workshop there are two different ways to bring an issue: \n\nIssue Holder (Guaranteed) – For those who have something showing up in their lives that you knowyou want to explore. Buying this ticket gives reassurance that your constellation will take place. There are only 2 guaranteed issue holder spaces available.\nRepresentative – You take part as a rep and witness. During the day\, there will also be 2 constellations chosen from the field. If you’d like the chance to be selected\, you can put your name into the bowl. If chosen\, you may either take the place yourself or offer it to another participant.\n\nThis way\, everyone has a chance to experience the work\, whether through bringing an issue\, representing\, or witnessing. \nAbout Katie\nKatie Despres is a Systemic Constellations Facilitator and Yoga Teacher based in Bristol. She is known for her down-to-earth yet intuitive approach\, blending systemic thinking\, embodiment\, and grounded presence. \nKatie trained extensively with the Centre for Systemic Constellations under Gaye Donaldson and Chris Williams\, including advanced study in Couples and Intimate Systems. She has over a decade of experience in transformational work\, alongside 1\,500+ hours of yoga training with Yogasara Bristol under Yoga Elders Christopher Gladwell and Sarah Harlow. \nHer work is shaped by a deep interest in human relationships — how unresolved experiences are carried through families\, and how we can gently return what does not belong. She facilitates workshops\, 1:1 sessions\, and couples work in Bristol and online. \nAbout Melissa\nMelissa (Driftway Wellness) is a sound practitioner\, Reiki Master\, massage therapist\, and mindfulness teacher. She has been supporting people’s wellbeing for over a decade\, offering spaces for rest\, release\, and reconnection. A regular participant in constellation workshops\, Melissa brings an attuned systemic understanding to her sound healing work. \nWho Can Attend \nWhether this is your first constellation or you’ve experienced the work before\, you are very welcome. This is an experiential workshop — everyone present participates in some way\, and each role contributes to the learning and healing field. Music that ignites the soul. \nThe Jam Jar Presents\nUstad Noor Bakhsh\n+ support from Dr Pete Yelding & Dhyan Singh\nThursday 28th August\nDoors Open 7.30pm\nThe Jam Jar\, Bristol\n– Standing show \nUstad Noor Bakhsh\, from near Pasni\, Balochistan\, is a master of the Balochi Benju (a keyed Zither)\, which he has played since he was a child. Noor Bakhsh is well known as a legendary instrumentalist throughout the Makran Coast\, but only garnered wider attention after his most recent recordings and videos. The Benju\, was once a Japanese children’s toy called the taishōkoto before it was adopted by Balochi musicians and made into the refined folk instrument that it is today. Noor Bakhsh plays an electric Benju\, getting his sound through an old pickup and small Phillips amp he bought from Karachi 2 decades ago. He carries forward the legacy of his teachers and inspirations such as Bilawal Belgium and Misri Khan Jamali but his own music elicits influences from various traditions and musical forms far beyond Balochistan. His virtuosic playing is deeply rooted in Balochi musical forms and enriched by his knowledge of South Asian Raags\, which he also renders in his own\, experimental style. \nHis repertoire includes Persian and Kurdish tunes that have probably floated in his land since before the modern borders of Iran and Pakistan were set up and Balochistan\, divided as it were. In one of his recent recording sessions\, he even played an Arabic Ghazal on his Benju. Needless to say\, he also renders popular and folk tunes in all the major languages spoken across Pakistan. His Sindhi repertoire is particularly novel in that it reflects a beautiful conversation between the neighbouring musical cultures of Sindh and Balochistan. No surprises\, that Noor Baksh plays several Bollywood songs too\, after all\, he has soaked the sounds around him like a sponge\, including those of all birds in the mountains and the jungle near his village. Other than his diverse repertoire\, he has several original compositions too\, including one inspired by bird songs. His debut album\, ‘Jingul‘\, was released digitally in September 2022\, and came out on vinyl via the UK’s Hive Mind Records on September 15\, 2023. \nFor listeners unfamiliar with Balochi music\, Noor Baksh’s electric Benju tone and his melodic ornamentations will be reminiscent of Ali Farka Toure’s style\, and polyrhythmic sixes and eights with so much groovy innovation and improvisation will make the body move in ways very similar to the music of West as well as East Africa. This is unsurprising\, given the well-documented migrations and seafaring\, historical\, intimacies between Balochistan and Africa\, via the greater Indian Ocean world. It is this world that his music brings back to life.
