SUMMARY:Feedback by Olukemi Lijadu
DESCRIPTION:Spike Island presents Feedback\, the largest solo exhibition by Nigerian-British artist\, filmmaker and DJ Olukemi Lijadu. Developed through research in Chicago\, Lagos and Bristol\, the exhibition centres on a major new film commission marking a landmark in the artist’s moving image practice. \nThe film uses audio feedback as a metaphor for the circulation of rhythm\, memory and cultural codes within the African diaspora. Tracing the evolution of the drum from West African tradition to electronic music\, Lijadu explores how looping underpins not only music but collective memory and connection across continents and generations. \nA sound system completes the installation\, drawing from Bristol’s sound system culture and functioning as a physical metaphor for the amplification of histories\, voices and vibrations. Inspired by early abstract cinema\, Feedback embraces repetition\, tempo and visual rhythm\, subverting a Western-centric art history in the process. \nFeatured image: ‘Feedback’ works in progress (2025). DESCRIPTION:Queendom Rising is a new photography exhibition by Bristol-based photographer George Netana celebrating women from Bristol’s diverse diaspora communities. \nThis portrait series is inspired by the artist’s lived experience as a mother of Māori daughters growing up in diaspora\, and explores how identity\, belonging\, and cultural memory are formed and sustained across generations and geographies. She has worked to bring individual voices into the frame while weaving together a shared story of resilience and connection. \nAt its heart\, the project recognises the contributions of women\, often the quiet architects of their communities\, whose acts of care\, leadership and creativity – however large or small – continue to shape and enrich Bristol’s cultural landscape. \nThis exhibition is part of DIASPORA! 26 \nAccessibility Information: \n\nRamped access: There is ramped access from both the front of the building and the rear yard.\nDisabled toilets: Accessible toilets are available on all floors of the building. \nTheatres: The adjoining theatre building is also accessible via a ramp and a lift. \nParking: On-street blue badge parking is available nearby\, and marked parking bays are clearly signed. No previous experience is needed. \nDates\nSaturday 7 February 2026\nSaturday 18 April 2026\nSaturday 6 June 2026\nSaturday 10 October 2026\nSaturday 5 December 2026 \nThese circles run bi-monthly\, with a summer pause. \nTime\n10:00am–1:00pm \nLocation\nStone Rock Lodge\, Chepstow \nWhat are Family / Systemic Constellations?\nFamily or Systemic Constellations is an experiential therapeutic approach developed by Bert Hellinger\, drawing on family therapy\, systemic thinking\, and group dynamics. \nThe work explores how unresolved experiences and patterns within our family systems can continue to influence our relationships\, work\, health\, and sense of belonging\, often without our conscious awareness. These influences may show up as repeating dynamics\, emotional burdens\, or a sense of being stuck. \nRather than talking about problems\, constellation work allows us to see and feel the wider system we are part of. In a group setting\, participants may be invited to act as representatives for people\, roles\, or elements within a family or life situation. Through this embodied process\, hidden dynamics can become visible\, allowing new understanding\, movement\, and relief to emerge. \nThis is not roleplay\, and no belief or prior knowledge is required. \nHow the Morning Works\nEach morning includes: \n\nArrival\, settling\, and a short grounding or meditation\nSimple group exercises to practise representing and attuning to the field\nTwo constellations\nTime for reflection and integration\nClosing circle\n\nAt each session\, anyone attending is welcome to put their name forward if they would like to work with a personal or professional issue. \nConstellations are chosen on the day\, guided by what feels most appropriate for the group and the wider field. Not everyone who puts their name forward will necessarily have their own constellation. \nAll roles within the process are equally valued. \nWays to Take Part\nIssue holder\nYou may bring a theme or situation you would like to explore. Two constellations will take place each morning. \nRepresentative\nYou may be invited to stand in for people\, roles\, or elements within another person’s constellation. Many people find this role deeply insightful\, and sometimes more impactful than having their own constellation. \nWitness\nYou can also attend simply holding presence within the group. Even from this role\, people often recognise parallels and gain clarity for their own lives. \nYou do not need to bring an issue to attend. \nWhy Attend Regularly?\nConstellation work often unfolds over time. Attending regularly allows you to: \n\ndeepen your embodied understanding of systemic patterns\nintegrate insights gently between sessions\nexperience different roles within the field\nbuild continuity and trust within the group\n\nEach circle responds to who is present and what is alive on the day. \nAbout Katie\nKatie Despres is a Family and Systemic Constellations Facilitator and Senior Yoga Teacher based in Bristol. \nShe trained extensively with the Centre for Systemic Constellations\, including advanced study in Couples & Intimate Systems. Her background includes psychology\, a previous career in executive recruitment\, and over a decade of embodied practice through yoga and meditation. \nKatie’s approach is grounded\, relational\, and down-to-earth. Participants are invited to be witnessed in community and speak their truth to the fire if they desire\, followed by further rounds of shared intention and creativity. Booking essential. \nCarole facilitates all aspects of the ritual to ensure a safe environment for transformation\, closing with a walk of gratitude. This event is not suitable for small children. DESCRIPTION:Reflecting on an increasingly digitised world\, JASAD (Arabic for Body) draws from the breath-centred essence of the Nay (ca. 5\,000 BC) to create a distinctive solo setup. In this performance\, Faris Ishaq plays the Nay and a leg-mounted frame drum simultaneously. \nDrawing from his global jazz background\, Faris fuses original Tashbib melodies\, a percussive and improvisational Nay style\, with the improvisational language of jazz. Through a rich palette of extended Nay techniques such as percussive sounds\, multi-phonics and distinctive Nay effects\, Faris creates acoustic illusions that evoke the feel of electronic or looped textures while remaining fully acoustic. SUMMARY:Afon Sistema with Mestre of Maracatu
DESCRIPTION:Mestre Gilmar Santana is a master of maracatu de baque virado from Igarassu\, Pernambuco\, Brazil\, and a direct heir of a long-standing family tradition. He is the grandson of Dona Mariu and the son of Dona Olga\, who passed this cultural knowledge through generations. Today\, he leads the Maracatu Estrela Brilhante de Igarassu\, a maracatu nation officially dated to 1824\, with oral history indicating even older origins.\n\nHe learned maracatu through lived experience\, growing up inside the tradition. His training came from observing\, practicing\, and participating with older generations in daily community life. Mestre Gilmar continues the tradition as it was taught to him\, preserving its practices\, values\, and community-based structure. His work is grounded in respect for elders and in passing knowledge to the next generations. He is also a luthier\, building and maintaining traditional instruments used in maracatu.\n\nHe also maintains the coco of Dona Olga\, a related cultural expression from the same community. In Igarassu\, maracatu and coco are closely connected and often practiced together.\n\nGilmar shares this tradition in Brazil and internationally while remaining rooted in his community. His strong voice and joyful presence bring people together and help keep this living tradition active as culture\, memory\, and resistance.

As a solo artist he blends acoustic Balafon\, steel drum and guitar with a repertoire of global songs\, with the aim of inspiring creativity\, cultural connection and joy through music.
