SUMMARY:Feedback by Olukemi Lijadu
DESCRIPTION:Spike Island presents Feedback\, the largest solo exhibition by Nigerian-British artist\, filmmaker and DJ Olukemi Lijadu. Developed through research in Chicago\, Lagos and Bristol\, the exhibition centres on a major new film commission marking a landmark in the artist’s moving image practice. \nThe film uses audio feedback as a metaphor for the circulation of rhythm\, memory and cultural codes within the African diaspora. Tracing the evolution of the drum from West African tradition to electronic music\, Lijadu explores how looping underpins not only music but collective memory and connection across continents and generations. \nA sound system completes the installation\, drawing from Bristol’s sound system culture and functioning as a physical metaphor for the amplification of histories\, voices and vibrations. Inspired by early abstract cinema\, Feedback embraces repetition\, tempo and visual rhythm\, subverting a Western-centric art history in the process. \nFeatured image: ‘Feedback’ works in progress (2025). SUMMARY:Queendom Rising: Portraits of Diaspora by George Netana
DESCRIPTION:Queendom Rising is a new photography exhibition by Bristol-based photographer George Netana celebrating women from Bristol’s diverse diaspora communities. \nThis portrait series is inspired by the artist’s lived experience as a mother of Māori daughters growing up in diaspora\, and explores how identity\, belonging\, and cultural memory are formed and sustained across generations and geographies. She has worked to bring individual voices into the frame while weaving together a shared story of resilience and connection. \nAt its heart\, the project recognises the contributions of women\, often the quiet architects of their communities\, whose acts of care\, leadership and creativity – however large or small – continue to shape and enrich Bristol’s cultural landscape. \nThis exhibition is part of DIASPORA! 26 \nAccessibility Information: \n\nRamped access: There is ramped access from both the front of the building and the rear yard.\nDisabled toilets: Accessible toilets are available on all floors of the building. \nTheatres: The adjoining theatre building is also accessible via a ramp and a lift. \nParking: On-street blue badge parking is available nearby\, and marked parking bays are clearly signed. DESCRIPTION:Join Foli – Bristol Djembe Players for a day of playing and dancing together to soulful West African rhythms. DESCRIPTION:A-must-witness-together-in-the-cinema feature film that zeroes in on the beginning of Sun Ra’s story\, in Birmingham\, Alabama\, USA and explores the soil and stars at that juncture of earth’s history. The film gets deep into all those juicy in-between zones –  into the folds and creases of place\, as well as the people\, the collectivity and the connectivity that gave rise to one of this universes’s greatest ever musician. A bandleader\, pioneer and icon adored by Thundercat\, Mats Gustaffson\, Moodymann\, Gilles Peterson\, and Yo Lo Tengo amongst millions of others. \nFollowing the film\, the writer\, poet & historian Edson Burton sits in with Pablo Guarise & Guillaume Maupin\, the film’s directors\, for reflections & questions. In 2014\, Edson curated the influential Afrofuturism season at the Watershed\, including an infamous late night screening of Sun Ra’s Space Is the Place\, so it’s a real honour to have Edson host this special screening & West Country Premiere. \nIn the bar\, DJ Fat Paul selects from a personal collection of 200+ Sun Ra releases/bootlegs & trades. It’s a vivid\, imaginative & street level portrait that searches for clues to Sun Ra’s future work and finds a city alive with music and rotten with segregation. \nBetween the years 1914 and 1993 Sun Ra (with the Arkestra and others) created vast swathes of music\, art\, poems and films: Windy City Doo Wop\, DIY forays into outer-jazz regions\, Afro-futuristic visions\, mystical Egyptian modal workouts\, spacey disco freak out. A desire to produce\, distribute\, rehearse and play was done with a conviction and ethic that has created a supernatural aura around his work ever since. \nHis life and work have become hugely loved\, replicated and reissued but his foundations are often bypassed – not here. This is the film to see\, not only to wonder at his esoteric roots but to see how his legacy is played out\, today\, in the City. It’s a piece of cinema that shows and values community and in that sense we trust we are in good hands. A parcel arrives on stage containing food\, medication\, learning materials\, a clock and a set of instructions. As performers repeatedly complete assigned tasks\, the work reveals the rhythms of discipline\, productivity and social conditioning that shape contemporary life. Your unique experience is incredibly valuable to us as we look to learn\, build\, and improve for the next DIASPORA! festival. \nDuring this focused session\, we will be holding space to reflect on the festival’s journey and collectively shape its next chapter. Attendees will be invited to share their favourite highlights from 2026\, discuss why DIASPORA! is so important to them\, and provide honest feedback on what went well and what could be improved.
