SUMMARY:Feedback by Olukemi Lijadu
DESCRIPTION:Spike Island presents Feedback\, the largest solo exhibition by Nigerian-British artist\, filmmaker and DJ Olukemi Lijadu. Developed through research in Chicago\, Lagos and Bristol\, the exhibition centres on a major new film commission marking a landmark in the artist’s moving image practice. \nThe film uses audio feedback as a metaphor for the circulation of rhythm\, memory and cultural codes within the African diaspora. Tracing the evolution of the drum from West African tradition to electronic music\, Lijadu explores how looping underpins not only music but collective memory and connection across continents and generations. \nA sound system completes the installation\, drawing from Bristol’s sound system culture and functioning as a physical metaphor for the amplification of histories\, voices and vibrations. Inspired by early abstract cinema\, Feedback embraces repetition\, tempo and visual rhythm\, subverting a Western-centric art history in the process. \nFeatured image: ‘Feedback’ works in progress (2025). She was recently a recipient of London’s ICA Image Behaviour grant where she was commissioned to create and debut her most recent film-performance Guardian Angel.  \nIn 2018\, she graduated from Stanford as a masters student in Philosophy where she focused on African philosophical systems. DESCRIPTION:Queendom Rising is a new photography exhibition by Bristol-based photographer George Netana celebrating women from Bristol’s diverse diaspora communities. \nThis portrait series is inspired by the artist’s lived experience as a mother of Māori daughters growing up in diaspora\, and explores how identity\, belonging\, and cultural memory are formed and sustained across generations and geographies. She has worked to bring individual voices into the frame while weaving together a shared story of resilience and connection. \nAt its heart\, the project recognises the contributions of women\, often the quiet architects of their communities\, whose acts of care\, leadership and creativity – however large or small – continue to shape and enrich Bristol’s cultural landscape. \nThis exhibition is part of DIASPORA! 26 \nAccessibility Information: \n\nRamped access: There is ramped access from both the front of the building and the rear yard.\nDisabled toilets: Accessible toilets are available on all floors of the building. \nTheatres: The adjoining theatre building is also accessible via a ramp and a lift. \nParking: On-street blue badge parking is available nearby\, and marked parking bays are clearly signed. DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, artist\, singer and dancer Batch Gueye leads you through traditional griot songs from West Africa. Drawing from the musical heritage of Senegal\, Casamance\, The Gambia and Mali\, you’ll explore the spiritual chants of the Senegalese Baye Fall people and learn songs associated with their leader. \nSinging becomes a form of prayer\, teaching kindness\, presence and understanding. Open to everyone\, the workshop invites you to harmonise\, explore your voice and tune into what you carry within. \nBaye Fall is a Senegalese Mouride collective. Their role is to encourage and unite people\, listen with compassion\, work with devotion and remain humble. They often hold chanting ceremonies and feed their community. \nPlease note: participants are asked to wear modest clothing covering shoulders and legs. This session is a special for DIASPORA!\, offering festival-goers the chance to dance and draw live performers in a collaborative setting. \nAnna\, from South West Dance Theatre\, will lead dance activities based in ballet\, commercial\, and contemporary styles to help participants explore the qualities of movement. She’s currently in residence at Bristol Old Vic until 2030 where she will write at least 2 plays. \nShe performs\, conducts workshops\, guest lectures\, hosts\, and finds alternative ways to educate and exchange ideas while focusing on methodologies of empowerment for non-centred people.
