SUMMARY:Feedback by Olukemi Lijadu
DESCRIPTION:Spike Island presents Feedback\, the largest solo exhibition by Nigerian-British artist\, filmmaker and DJ Olukemi Lijadu. Developed through research in Chicago\, Lagos and Bristol\, the exhibition centres on a major new film commission marking a landmark in the artist’s moving image practice. \nThe film uses audio feedback as a metaphor for the circulation of rhythm\, memory and cultural codes within the African diaspora. Tracing the evolution of the drum from West African tradition to electronic music\, Lijadu explores how looping underpins not only music but collective memory and connection across continents and generations. \nA sound system completes the installation\, drawing from Bristol’s sound system culture and functioning as a physical metaphor for the amplification of histories\, voices and vibrations. Inspired by early abstract cinema\, Feedback embraces repetition\, tempo and visual rhythm\, subverting a Western-centric art history in the process. \nFeatured image: ‘Feedback’ works in progress (2025). Courtesy of the artist. \nABOUT OLUKEMI\nOlukemi Lijadu is a multi-disciplinary artist and DJ\, with a focus on moving image and sound. She was recently a recipient of London’s ICA Image Behaviour grant where she was commissioned to create and debut her most recent film-performance Guardian Angel.  \nIn 2018\, she graduated from Stanford as a masters student in Philosophy where she focused on African philosophical systems. Her academic background grounds her research-based approach to her artistic practice. Her work explores questions around music of the diaspora\, heritage and the complexity of feeling.\n\n@kemkemlij

SUMMARY:Queendom Rising: Portraits of Diaspora by George Netana
DESCRIPTION:Queendom Rising is a new photography exhibition by Bristol-based photographer George Netana celebrating women from Bristol’s diverse diaspora communities. \nThis portrait series is inspired by the artist’s lived experience as a mother of Māori daughters growing up in diaspora\, and explores how identity\, belonging\, and cultural memory are formed and sustained across generations and geographies. SUMMARY:Global Majority Environment Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Across Bristol\, Global Majority communities are already engaging in environmental work in many different ways – through community organising\, food growing\, cultural practice\, land stewardship\, wellbeing and care. \nHowever\, much of this work remains unseen\, disconnected and largely excluded from how climate action is shaped in the city. This gathering creates a space to bring that work into the room\, on our own terms.  \nWhat to expect\nIn this participatory session we will: \n\nshare stories of how we are already engaging in environmental matters\nrecognise our strengths and assets: skills\, knowledge\, relationships and practices\nconnect across communities\nexplore how we want to influence what is happening in Bristol.\n\nWe will also introduce a simple overview of Bristol’s climate context\, not to overwhelm\, but to help us identify where our work already connects\, what we want to understand more\, and where we may want to influence or challenge.  \nThe session will include:\n \n\nsmall group conversations (Story Café)\ncollective reflection and dialogue\na participatory ‘fishbowl’ discussion\nopen space for collaboration and self-organisation\nshared food\, music and informal connection.\n\nWho is this for?\nThis gathering is designed primarily for Global Majority individuals and groups active in: \n\nenvironmental work\ncommunity organising\ncultural and creative practice\nland\, food\, nature and wellbeing\nstrategic and community leadership.\n\nA small number of aligned allies and institutional actors will also be invited to listen\, build relationships and support future pathways where appropriate. Come as you are. Bring your work\, your experience\, your questions and your curiosity. What becomes possible when we organise from what we already have? \nAge: 16+ (under 18s must be accompanied by an adult)\nVenue: The Pickle Factory\, BS5 0HL\nAccess: The main hall\, cafe and garden are all accessible to wheelchair users. There is an accessible toilet on the ground floor.\n \nPlease fill out this short form to book your place.  \nFacilitators\nJosé Barco (CoLab International)\nGnisha Bevan (Black Seeds Network/ Nature Rising)\n \nAbout Gnisha\nGnisha Bevan is an Educator\, Producer and Consultant. She leads the Black Seeds Network\, co-developed with Roger Griffith MBE\, to showcase and support the incredible work of Global Majority environmentalists around Bristol. She’s also the catalyst behind the award-winning Nature Rising Programme. Gnisha has advised on a range of environmental and social justice projects\, specialising in brokering equitable partnerships between grassroots communities and ‘mainstream’ environmental organisations. She’s passionate about representing and recognising the existing work of Global Majority environmentalists in innovative ways.\n@blackseedsnetwork  \nAbout José \nJosé Barco is a Colombian facilitator\, musician and community organiser based in the UK. He is Director of CoLab International\, where he designs participatory processes that help communities\, organisations and movements collaborate\, learn and imagine new possibilities together. SUMMARY:Desi Day: Bristol Baithaks: Morning Ragas
DESCRIPTION:A Baithak (‘bair-tak’) is an informal and intimate concert in which raga-based music is performed. This is the first in a series of baithaks in the Southwest to take place throughout 2026 in partnership with ZerOclassikal\, The Mehfil Space\, Curzon Cinema & Arts\, and Arts Council England National Lottery Projects Grants. \nRagas are the melodic foundation of South Asian Classical music traditions. Every raga has a specific mood and association with a time of day. Morning ragas are much more rarely performed in the UK\, because concerts are more often programmed in the evening. \nStart your day and your weekend with the sensation of tender and reflective morning ragas performed by Dr Pete Yelding on sitar\, accompanied by Dhanraj Persaud Pandey on tabla. This session\, part of Desi Day – celebrating South Asian culture with a series of events at Arnolfini\, will take place in the theatre on the ground floor. \nFor all ages (children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult) \nVenue: Arnolfini\, BS1 4QA \nFor access information visit the venue website \nAbout Pete \nDr Pete Yelding is a sitarist and cellist\, and the 7th generation of a family of travelling performers. He is one of only a handful of contemporary musicians to become an exponent of the Hindustani music lineage known as the Lucknow-Shahjahanpur Gharana\, headed by his teacher\, Ustad Irfan Muhammad Khan. \nHe establishes in his performances a raw\, but tender evocation of whichever raga he is presenting. He seeks to rehabilitate for modern audiences the deeply stirring\, heavier sound of past sitar and sarod luminaries. \n@peteyelding \n \n\n

SUMMARY:Create Music with Your Voice: Vocal Workshop with AUGUST
DESCRIPTION:Led by Bristol-based composer\, producer\, and educator AUGUST\, this 2-hour workshop explores the creative possibilities of the human voice. Using frameworks developed through her pioneering work with experimental vocal ensembles\, including the Bass Choir approach to bass-driven choral innovation\, AUGUST will guide participants through improvisation\, vocal experimentation\, and arrangement techniques rooted in bass music styles. \nLearners will collaboratively build and perform a short piece\, discovering how the voice can function as both melody and texture in contemporary bass music. By the end of the session\, participants will gain practical skills\, creative confidence and a deeper understanding of how to use their voice as a tool for musical expression\, composition and experimental performance. \nOpen to all – no prior singing experience required. This is a unique chance to access methods and exercises previously experienced only by members of AUGUST’s experimental vocal ensembles. \nAge: 16+ \nVenue: The Harbour Totterdown\, BS4 2EG \nContact the venue for accessibility information. \nABOUT AUGUST \n\nAUGUST is a Bristol-based singer\, songwriter\, producer\, presenter\, composer\, and educator creating hybrid live electronic music rooted in bass\, dark soul\, and experimental sound design.
