SUMMARY:SWDT summer dance intensive: Cecchetti - Llfe & Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Ballet students at South West Dance Theatre will hear a lot of reference to Cecchetti – this is your chance to really dig your teeth in and find out more about this ballet figurehead\, the world he lived in and the ballets he influenced. \nAimed at ages 7-12 years old. \nThe day will give a flavour of the ballet training principles that had ballet’s greatest stars clinging to his coaching\, some of the ballets he and his students shaped\, as well as the dramatic history of the world around him at the time. \nLike the Nile Rodgers of 19th century ballet\, everyone who was anyone in those circles at the time worked with Cecchetti at some point. As a dancer in his early career\, he created the iconic role of Bluebird in Sleeping Beauty\, and later he coached ballet legends including Anna Pavlova\, Tamara Karsavina\, Vaslav Nijinsky\, Marie Rambert\, Ninette de Valoius and Leonide Massine. \nBorn back stage in a theatre in Italy in 1850\, Enrico’s whole life was steeped in dance and theatre. He worked with the Imperial Russian Ballet in Russia during the political hotbed of 1890s Russia\, leaving for Warsaw just a few years before the Russian revolution of 1905. He joined the Diaghilev Ballet Russes in 1909 shortly before break out of the first World War during which the company fled Europe to tour America. In 1918 he opened a school in London\, eventually returning to Italy before he died in 1928. \nThe day will be taught by South West Dance Theatre director Anna Demming Davis\, whose Cecchetti training has been moulded by a stellar line up of teachers including Dorothy Ind\, Penny Kay\, Cara Drower\, the late Joan Hewson (whose training traces back through Margaret Saul and Margaret Craske to Cecchetti himself)\, and senior examiner Cecchetti Society Trust Chair and former Cecchetti Faculty Committee Chair Elisabeth Swan\, with whom Anna continues to train. SUMMARY:Artists Gathering on BFI NETWORK's New Free Scheme
DESCRIPTION:Join Ella McDonald from the BFI NETWORK team at Watershed on Friday 31st July at Arnolfini. Made possible through National Lottery funding\, BFI NETWORK collaborates with film organisations and leading cultural venues across the UK to provide short film and early feature development funding\, industry-backed professional development and networking support to producers\, writers and directors aged 18 and above. Our team\, based at Watershed in Bristol\, are proud to support emerging filmmakers in the south west.\n\n\n \n\n\nOur monthly Artist Gatherings are designed to bring together members of our network to connect\, share their projects\, and discuss areas where support is needed within the arts community.\n\n\n \n\n\nElla will be talking about New Voices: Step Up\, a free mentoring scheme for working-class writers\, directors and writer-directors based in the south west of England which will open for applications on Tue 7 July and close on Tue 12 Aug. They will talk about the scheme\, as well as offer top tips for applying. They will also outline the other opportunities BFI NETWORK south west offers filmmakers in the region.

DESCRIPTION:A hosted talk about the power of creativity and its relationship to hope and resilience \n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a special evening of discussion with Iranian-British dual citizen\, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe. Wrongfully imprisoned for almost six years in Iran\, Nazanin made international headlines as a pawn in a feud between her two nation states. Both she and her husband\, Richard Ratcliffe\, went on hunger strikes for her freedom. \nThis intimate event takes place at the Centrespace Gallery in Bristol\, where artist Niki Groom will be exhibiting her reportage work. Including Love is a doing word (2022)\, a hand-painted depiction of Richard’s hunger strike outside the Foreign Office. \nDuring her years in detention\, Nazanin found solace through sewing with her fellow female prisoners\, using fabric Richard sent from Liberty of London. This evening is a chance to hear from Nazanin in her own words\, and to explore the dynamic between creativity\, hope and resilience. \nCheck back soon for full programme details\, including other speakers.
