SUMMARY:The Jam Jar Presents: Ustad Noor Bakhsh
DESCRIPTION:“Life-affirming Balochi folk that can’t fail to stir something inside any member of the human race. At 80\, Ustad’s fairytale rise to the global stage isn’t quite as remarkable as the first benju note you hear ringing through his junkshop amp. A dizzying melange of sound from classical raag to zahirook\, Persia to Kurdistan\, birdsong to Bollywood – an unmissable musical experience that transcends time and space.” – Headfirst Editor’s pick \nInspired by birdsong and told through the twisting tones of the benju\, Ustad Noor Bakhsh’s music straddles the space between modern-day Pakistan and Iran\, evoking a vivid tapestry of emotion. Music that ignites the soul. \nThe Jam Jar Presents\nUstad Noor Bakhsh\n+ support from Dr Pete Yelding & Dhyan Singh\nThursday 28th August\nDoors Open 7.30pm\nThe Jam Jar\, Bristol\n– Standing show \nUstad Noor Bakhsh\, from near Pasni\, Balochistan\, is a master of the Balochi Benju (a keyed Zither)\, which he has played since he was a child. Noor Bakhsh is well known as a legendary instrumentalist throughout the Makran Coast\, but only garnered wider attention after his most recent recordings and videos. The Benju\, was once a Japanese children’s toy called the taishōkoto before it was adopted by Balochi musicians and made into the refined folk instrument that it is today. Noor Bakhsh plays an electric Benju\, getting his sound through an old pickup and small Phillips amp he bought from Karachi 2 decades ago. He carries forward the legacy of his teachers and inspirations such as Bilawal Belgium and Misri Khan Jamali but his own music elicits influences from various traditions and musical forms far beyond Balochistan. His virtuosic playing is deeply rooted in Balochi musical forms and enriched by his knowledge of South Asian Raags\, which he also renders in his own\, experimental style. \nHis repertoire includes Persian and Kurdish tunes that have probably floated in his land since before the modern borders of Iran and Pakistan were set up and Balochistan\, divided as it were. In one of his recent recording sessions\, he even played an Arabic Ghazal on his Benju. Needless to say\, he also renders popular and folk tunes in all the major languages spoken across Pakistan. His Sindhi repertoire is particularly novel in that it reflects a beautiful conversation between the neighbouring musical cultures of Sindh and Balochistan. No surprises\, that Noor Baksh plays several Bollywood songs too\, after all\, he has soaked the sounds around him like a sponge\, including those of all birds in the mountains and the jungle near his village. Other than his diverse repertoire\, he has several original compositions too\, including one inspired by bird songs. His debut album\, ‘Jingul‘\, was released digitally in September 2022\, and came out on vinyl via the UK’s Hive Mind Records on September 15\, 2023. \nFor listeners unfamiliar with Balochi music\, Noor Baksh’s electric Benju tone and his melodic ornamentations will be reminiscent of Ali Farka Toure’s style\, and polyrhythmic sixes and eights with so much groovy innovation and improvisation will make the body move in ways very similar to the music of West as well as East Africa. This is unsurprising\, given the well-documented migrations and seafaring\, historical\, intimacies between Balochistan and Africa\, via the greater Indian Ocean world. It is this world that his music brings back to life.

SUMMARY:Expression Stage at Bristol Harbour Festival
DESCRIPTION:A groundbreaking day of activism\, artistry and identity to take over Millennium Square – presented by Good Law Project\, Diverse Artists Network and Bristol Legacy Foundation \nThe 2025 edition of the Bristol Harbour Festival is set to deliver its most powerful programme to date\, as the Expression Stage at Millennium Square returns on Sunday 20th July with a line-up that blends activism\, urgent social commentary and cultural expression. Curated in collaboration with Good Law Project as well as Diverse Artists Network and Bristol Legacy Foundation\, the Expression Stage will feature major national names. Festival goers can expect to see presenter and campaigner Carol Vorderman and award-winning trans activist Ella Morgan alongside a host of emerging talents and community voices from across the South West. \n“Bristol Harbour Festival is one of the UK’s biggest free festivals – and bringing such powerful names to the Expression Stage reflects Bristol’s commitment to celebrating diversity of thought and voice.” said Leader of Bristol City Council\, Tony Dyer. “Highlighting these issues on such a huge platform in Bristol is exactly what we need to be doing. It’s about openness\, access and truth – all free to the public because our city believes in lifting these conversations up.” \nThe landmark partnership with Good Law Project will programme talks\, discussions and panels featuring Ella Morgan\, the first trans bride on Married at First Sight UK\, who will share the stage alongside Jo Maugham KC – barrister\, campaigner and founder of Good Law Project: a not-for-profit organisation that uses the law to protect the interests of the public. Their conversation will spotlight the trans experience in public life\, the media and society at large\, promising both vulnerability and empowerment. \n“At Good Law Project\, we believe in the power of lived experience to drive meaningful change. The Expression Stage is not just a platform – it’s a powerful amplifier for voices too often excluded from national conversations.” Jo Maugham\, Founder and Director at Good Law Project said. “To speak openly about injustice\, identity and systemic inequality in a space as public and vibrant as the Bristol Harbour Festival is both radical and necessary. This is about bringing real issues to mass audiences through the energy of culture and the authenticity of community.” \nIn the evening\, the stage turns to political accountability with an unmissable panel featuring broadcaster and activist Carol Vorderman\, Good Law Project founder Jo Maugham and green energy pioneer Dale Vince. Their session\, titled “A Year of Holding Power to Account\,” will reflect on political integrity\, grassroots influence and the fight for democratic fairness. \nElsewhere in the programme and kicking off Sunday at 11:00am\, the Bristol Legacy Foundation (BLF) will host a powerful workshop session featuring actor and singer Michelle Gayle\, exploring what it means to be an effective ally in today’s social landscape. This powerful session will explore the true meaning of allyship through the lens of anti-racism\, abolition and reparatory justice\, featuring contributions from BLF Chair Asher Craig and international campaigner Nils Agger. Drawing on lived experience and practical frameworks\, the discussion will challenge audiences to reflect on what it truly means to stand up\, speak out\, and build equitable partnerships that go beyond performative gestures.  \nThis will be followed by a Spoken Word showcase presented by the Diverse Artists Network centered around the theme of DIASPORA!. Beginning with an introduction by drama facilitator and curator Hiba Elhindi\, the spoken word session includes appearances from youth advocate Dayton Powell\, genre-fluid rapper Gracie Akinkunmi and singer\, songwriter and poetic performer Nia Bimkubwa\, and continues with a mix of emerging and established voices presenting work rooted in identity\, resilience and community. \nVandna Mehta Co Founder at Diverse Artists Network\, said: “The Expression Stage is a reminder that festivals aren’t just about entertainment – they’re about connection\, culture and community. This line-up reflects the beauty and strength of Bristol’s diverse creative talent. We’re proud to work with artists who bring lived experience to the forefront\, using spoken word\, music and performance to ignite empathy and action\, enabling diverse artists to be seen\, heard and be paid!” \nThe afternoon will shift focus to climate justice with a workshop on water pollution led by Jo Bateman\, a wild swimmer and right-to-swim campaigner taking legal action against South West Water\, and Katrina McDonnell\, gender equality activist and founder of Menstruation Matters. This is followed by a panel on protest rights featuring Gaie Delap\, a retired teacher and climate activist imprisoned for her role in a Just Stop Oil blockade\, Raj Chada\, a leading criminal lawyer specialising in protest defence and Blue\, a trans kids activist tackling transphobia from the Government and Media. These sessions aim to equip audiences with both the legal knowledge and emotional fuel to engage with today’s most pressing political issues. \nThe evening will come to a close with the Diverse Artists Network returning with a finale of spoken word performances by multidisciplinary artist Roxanna Vilk\, electric hip hop poet Blaise Penny Kirkwood (iAM13E) and British/Chilean illustrator and writer Valentina Huxley\, bringing the programme to an emotional and artistic crescendo. \nWith themes spanning environmental justice\, gender identity\, political transparency and creative resilience\, the Expression Stage at Millennium Square positions itself not just as a platform for performance\, but as a vital civic space. It invites audiences to listen\, reflect and participate in conversations shaping our collective future. \nFor more information and updates on Bristol Harbour Festival\, head to the website and follow the event on Facebook and Instagram.

SUMMARY:Artist Gathering: Balancing Parenthood With A Creative Career
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly Artist Gatherings are designed to bring together members of our network to connect\, share their projects\, and discuss areas where support is needed within the arts community. \nJoin us on Friday\, 27 June\, 11 AM–1 PM at Arnolfini Arts for our next Artists Gathering\, on balancing parenthood with a creative career. Led by Dr Natalie Hyacinth\, this session is for anyone juggling lots of different roles alongside their creative practice. \nNatalie is a sound artist and writer\, creating and thinking about music at the intersections of technology\, climate justice and Black life. Her research is intersectional and interdisciplinary\, incorporating themes from Cultural Geography\, Philosophy and Afrofuturism. Experimenting with sounds and sonic technologies as a form of defiance and resistance\, Natalie seeks to create new sound worlds as part of her activism\, a creative practice she explores under the name The Black Astral. \nSign up and come along to this interactive session! \n\nWe launched our memberships\, who receive free access to these events. Members receive a discount code in the confirmation email and newsletters. Find out more at https://www.diverseartistsnetwork.com/memberships/ \n \n\n

SUMMARY:Artist Retreat: Deep Time Walk with Diverse Artists Network and EcoWild
DESCRIPTION:In this 2 hour walk through beautiful countryside south of Bristol you will get to know the land as well as connecting with the past and the great flow of life that has brought us into existence! \nWe will walk at a steady pace to suit the needs of the group\, and there will be pauses as we step through Deep Time – the epic journey that has formed this landscape and that will continue beyond our lives. You will be invited to share reflections with others in the group as part of this. The route is gently undulating fields without steep inclines. We will visit the Stanton Drew ancient standing stones site along the way. \nThis practice is drawn from the Active Hope work by Joanna Macey and others that invites us to see with ancient eyes\, offering new perspectives to this short time we have on earth. \nOn the way back we will Gather the Gifts of our Ancestors and let the land guide us through the human journeys behind each of us. \nThis walk is for Diverse Artist Network members and any other Diasporic Creatives. The route is not wheelchair accessible. \nMeeting place: Outside the Rising Sun\, Church Street\, Pensford. \nDiverse Artists Network is a development agency for diversity in the arts\, promoting cultural competency and representation in the sector. Our organisation brings together artists\, creatives\, and musicians across Bristol and the South West region with the aim of building national and international networks that encompass the broadest spectrum of diversity and representation. You can find out more about their work here. \nEcoWild engage people of all ages and backgrounds with the living landscape\, prioritising those who are not well represented or who face barriers. You can find out more about their work here. \nThis event is part of the Festival of Nature Community Programme\, which has over 60 events happening across 9 days from 7 to 15 June. Find out more about the events happening on your doorstep here. \nBOOK NOW
