SUMMARY:Feedback by Olukemi Lijadu
DESCRIPTION:Spike Island presents Feedback\, the largest solo exhibition by Nigerian-British artist\, filmmaker and DJ Olukemi Lijadu. Developed through research in Chicago\, Lagos and Bristol\, the exhibition centres on a major new film commission marking a landmark in the artist’s moving image practice. \nThe film uses audio feedback as a metaphor for the circulation of rhythm\, memory and cultural codes within the African diaspora. Tracing the evolution of the drum from West African tradition to electronic music\, Lijadu explores how looping underpins not only music but collective memory and connection across continents and generations. \nA sound system completes the installation\, drawing from Bristol’s sound system culture and functioning as a physical metaphor for the amplification of histories\, voices and vibrations. Inspired by early abstract cinema\, Feedback embraces repetition\, tempo and visual rhythm\, subverting a Western-centric art history in the process. \nFeatured image: ‘Feedback’ works in progress (2025). Courtesy of the artist. \nABOUT OLUKEMI\nOlukemi Lijadu is a multi-disciplinary artist and DJ\, with a focus on moving image and sound. She was recently a recipient of London’s ICA Image Behaviour grant where she was commissioned to create and debut her most recent film-performance Guardian Angel.  \nIn 2018\, she graduated from Stanford as a masters student in Philosophy where she focused on African philosophical systems. Her academic background grounds her research-based approach to her artistic practice. Her work explores questions around music of the diaspora\, heritage and the complexity of feeling.\n\n@kemkemlij

SUMMARY:The Map Has No Borders
DESCRIPTION:Within each of us lives a map. A breathing record of where we’ve been\, where we come from\, and where those before us have walked. Held in the body\, woven into memory\, carried in our ancestors’ stories\, it quietly guides us: stay here. move on. come home. \nFor those of us from diaspora communities\, with colonised heritage\, or whose families have known forced migration\, these maps can be especially layered. The question of where we belong rarely has a simple answer. Home can mean several places at once\, or none quite completely. And the stories that shape us are often ones we’ve inherited rather than lived\, carried across borders and down through generations. \nThis workshop is an invitation to bring those maps into the world and explore what they hold\, together. \nWe’ll work through storytelling\, making\, drawing and conversation\, uncovering the maps we navigate by: maps of belonging to many worlds\, maps that can lead us home. \nQuestions we’ll sit with: \n\nHow far do our maps reach?\nWhat threads connect the different parts?\nWhat stories of longing and loss\, of dreams and desires\, have been carried along the way?\n\nWhat you’ll take away \nYou’ll leave with a piece of creative work you’ve made yourself over the course of the morning. Many participants also find that the process of naming these journeys\, and hearing others name theirs\, brings something unexpected: a new clarity about their own story\, and a sense of being understood. \nWe gather in a space of genuine welcome\, with room for up to 12 people. \nNo prior experience needed. \n\nInez Aponte is a storyteller and facilitator of Puerto Rican and Surinamese descent\, with over 25 years of experience working at the intersection of performance\, identity and community. Her one-woman show Un|Earthed — a magical realist exploration of heritage\, belonging and colonial history — has been performed across the UK and Europe. \nIf you’d like to experience the show that inspired this workshop\, Inez will be performing Un|Earthed in Bristol on Wed 25 March and in Bath on Thurs 26 March.
