Anatolian Folk Dance and Song Workshop

As part of our ambitious program of events during our summer exhibition Dance Out – the RWA are delighted to introduce you to a beginner friendly, Anatolian Folk and Dance evening within the beautiful galleries. 

What can you expect? 

  • Learn Anatolian percussion in a 9/8 rhythm including demonstration of different Anatolian percussion instruments
  • Learn an Anatolian folk song for this rhythm – hear an example on Spotify here
  • Learn a simple Anatolian folk dance
  • Show and tell with different Anatolian folk instruments including percussion, kemence and ney – try them out!
  • Ending in a jam with percussion, song and dance
  • Participants are welcome to bring their own folk instruments, from any where in the world, to play at both the lesson and jam

About the facilitators

Anna Kemper– is a US born, Bristol based dancer, percussionist, educator and producer. She celebrates her diverse migratory ancestral roots across Central and Southwest Asia, North Africa, Eastern and Western Europe through the music and dance of these areas.

Sevilay Ataseven Turlington was raised on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey and settled for over twenty years in the South West of England, Sevilay brings the songs, rhythms and stories of Anatolia, the Balkans and the Middle East to new ears. Growing up surrounded by Turkey’s rich musical traditions, sharing these sounds beyond their homeland is her enduring passion.
