A Love Letter to Broadmead: Five Women, One Show

Five women from completely different backgrounds bring their own unique solo performances to this showcase. Taking place in an empty shop unit in The Galleries, transformed into a makeshift theatre, each show allows women of different diasporas to take up space and tell their story. This DIASPORA! event is part of Compass Presents’ A Love Letter to Broadmead project.

FEATURING…

Cosmopolitan Seychellois – a comedian whose material draws on her Seychellois identity and the trials of everyday life. Cosmopolitan Seychellois will perform a brief stand-up set presenting her perspective as a comedian from the global majority.

Jo Cross – an actor, writer and para-academic with a longstanding connection to the garment trade. Jo will perform an extract from her show Sartorius, using verse and narrative to explore the intersections of East London Jewish tailoring and Irish construction communities.

Ceci Opal – a Colombian artist whose movement practice spans theatre, fusion belly dance and ancestral themes. Ceci will present her piece Scissor Gold Bat, a dark urban fusion masked solo piece on decolonisation, with lyrics in English and Quechua.

Muneera Pilgrim – a poet, cultural producer and storyteller in residence at Bristol Old Vic, rooted in community archiving and empowerment. Muneera will perform pieces from her collection That Day She’ll Proclaim Her Chronicles, exploring Bristolian identity and belonging through music and archive.

Rene Katiisa – a Ugandan-born British actor and theatre-maker based in Bristol, trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama. Rene will perform Sugarcane and Concrete, a theatrical experience following a British Ugandan woman’s journey from childhood to motherhood.
