Supporting Transgender Individuals and Men in Our Community

At Diverse Artists Network, we know it’s fundamental to support the transgender people and men within our community for a functional society. As part of Transgender Awareness Day and International Men’s Day, we’d like to share some research and resources to support the transgender people and men within our community.

Societal expectations of masculinity often discourage men from discussing their feelings, leading many to suffer in silence. In England, 12.5% of men experience a mental health disorder, and men are three times more likely to die by suicide than women. Additionally, men face nearly double the rate of alcohol-related deaths compared to women. To mark Transgender Awareness Day and International Men’s Day, resources are being shared to support individuals who identify as men, including transgender men, highlighting the importance of addressing mental health challenges and promoting well-being.

Resources or communities to support our male community:

A study highlights significant mental health risks for transgender and non-binary individuals in England, with long-term conditions affecting 16.4% of transgender men, 15.9% of transgender women, and nearly half (47.2%) of non-binary transgender people, compared to 8.8% of cisgender men and 12% of cisgender women. TransActual’s Trans Lives Survey 2021 reveals systemic issues in accessing healthcare, with 14% of trans people being denied GP care, 70% facing transphobia in non-transition-related care, and 57% avoiding doctors altogether. Intersectional barriers further compound these issues, with trans people of color experiencing heightened discrimination and racism in trans-specific healthcare, and disabled trans individuals frequently encountering ableism. These challenges discourage trans individuals from seeking necessary medical care, contributing to poor mental and physical health outcomes.
